There is no precise formula for analyzing the quality of hand-made rug. There are however, a number of factors that will give you a good indication as to whether a rug is overpriced or a good value. These factors include, the country of origin, the specific quality description, the number of knots per square inch and the origin of the wool. If you can obtain the important "quality" information, you have taken the first step towards making an apples to apples comparision on various rugs, and thereby an educateds decision.

Listed below are questions you should raise regarding any rug you are considering buying. Once you have the same information about each rug you are considering, you can then make a fair comparision.

  • What is the country of origin?
  • What city or region was the rug produced in?
  • What is the quality definition from that specific country?
  • How many knots per square inch does the rug have?
  • What are the raw materials used ? (wool, silk, cotton)
  • How were the materials produced? (wool: machine spun vs. hand spun)
  • What type of wool is used ? (Domestic, New Zealand)
  • How does the wool feel to the touch ?
    (soft and oily ? coarse and dry? or somewhere in between)
  • What is the age of the rug?
  • If the rug is old what is the overall condition ?
    (excellent, good, fair, poor)
  • What is the exact size of the rug ?
  • What is the exact footage of the rug ?
  • What is the total cost of the rug ?
  • What does the cost breakdown to per square foot ?
    (cost of rug divided by the number of square feet)

Armed with the information you have obtained from the questions listed above you can now make a fair comparision between several rugs sources you may be considering.
