Chainstitch rugs have been in continuous production
in the Kashmir
region of India since the days of the Mughal dynasties. Called "gabbas,"
thses worked textiles have been used as floor coverings for centuries.
They have been in vogue in the West since the last half of the nineteenth
century, when ancient oriental crafts were rediscovered by scholoras
and artists such as Gottfried Semper (1803 - 1879) and Alois Riegl
(1856 - 1905) Gradually, wester styles infused the workplace in Kashmir
and a gentle blend of Eastern and Western motifs can still be detected.
The Chain Stitch is created by forcing an "ari,"
or small hooked awl reputedly developed during the reign of Akbar,
Through the surface of the base cloth to cretae a loop stitch. All
our designs, traditional and modern, are executed in Kashmir with
the use of the "ari,". Our embroidery yarn is 2-ply, 110
- count wool and applied to a base cloth of handloomed "dossoti"
cotton duck. Each rug is backed by a panel of 100% cotton (2/10s)
canvas.
Although hundreds of designs are available
and in stock, we can weave specific designs with ease.
